The Echoing Green – In Scarlet and Vile

Description

In Scarlet and Vile is a Limited Edition album by the American synth-pop band The Echoing Green, independently released in 2011, distributed by A Different Drum. The album was produced, programmed, and recorded by band member Joey Belville at “our studio behind Joey’s house (USA)“; with additional engineering by Chrissy Jeter. Three cover songs are included as bonus tracks: “Battered And Bruised” by Statemachine, “Here Is The House” by Depeche Mode, as well as Fold Zandura’s “King Planet“.

The Echoing Green is Joey Belville on guitars and vocals (as well as programming), Chrissy Jeter on vocals and synthesizers, Wil Foster on synthesizers (as well as programming), John Ball on guitars, and Dave Adams on drums.

Five years in the making, and with a couple of changes to the lineup, the ‘In Scarlet And Vile Special Edition’ heralds a haunting yet addictive return for the aggregation fronted by Joey Belville. With the songs addressing a variety of life issues and situations the lyrics can be grittier and sometimes darker than your traditional release but this only serves to build a depth and sincerity to each of the songs. «Heaven (The Devil In The Details)» is a song that hooks it’s way in with a catchy chorus that embrace the conflict and desire of a failed relationship and the turmoil of emotions that accompany it. «The Huntress» explores a deeper part of the psyche examining the self-destructive nature of a girl, with her prey providing the counter-lines. This isn’t a collection of songs that would be described as overtly spiritual but they do tie in to topics that could easily be heard on a Sunday morning, one exception to this is found in «Away» in which the band sing of an all-consuming love from God. The extra tracks and remixes on this special addition version are a brilliant addition and enhance the album rather than feeling like last minute recordings. If you are a fan of electronic pop and rock, and enjoy a ’90s sound then this is definitely worth searching out. [Mike Hartley, Cross Rhythms, October 2011]
