Description
The self-titled, sole album by the American disco/dance-pop combo The Company was released on BEC Recordings in 2000, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was recorded by Dean Baskerville at Supernatural Sound and Baskerville Recording in Oregon City, Oregon; and was produced by Bradley Swanson with Bryan Everett co-producing. Mixed by Craig Smith.
The Company was a one-off disco side project featuring 3/4ths of Pep Squad; Bradley Swanson, Bryan Everett, Evan Railton, Kristen Burns, and Reuben Andrew Valdez.
In a whirl of glitterballs, flares and big hair, The Company emerge blinking from the ’70s – and decide they prefer life there! Quite simply gloriously evocative of those heady days, this is deftly done, with tongue firmly in cheek and a big smile on the face, whilst able to make a spiritual point at the same time. With names like Tadpole Lowenbad (bass), Freaky O’Neill (keyboards) and Rockafella on rhythm guitar, you have to hand it to these guys, who, judging by the cover shots, appear to have walked straight out of a Starsky & Hutch episode. Musically we have styles ranging through Chic («Ooh C’mon»), Funkadelic meets James Brown («Boogie Machine»), Gloria Gaynor («You Turn My World Around»), Earth, Wind And Fire («International»), Kool And The Gang («All Around The World») and Donna Summer («Send Me Your Love»). In addition, «Will You Be There?» could easily be the answer – some 20 years later – to Blondie’s «Call Me». There’s even an appearance by the Boogie Police, who advise: “Give up or get down.” As for me, I’ll plump for the latter. Funktastic! [Steve Best, Cross Rhythms, February 2001]
