Description
The self-titled debut album by the American reggae combo Temple Yard was released on Gotee Records in 1999, distributed by Chordant Distribution.
This CD is yet more proof that division is not subtraction. Last year’s uneasy split of Christafari could have been the death knell for reggae in the Christian market. But this division has actually multiplied the chances to hear quality island sounds. With the core of Christafari off creating fantastic stuff separately, former band members have reconfigured as Temple Yard to produce what fans have come to expect: polished, Jamerican music.
This time out, Temple Yard has replaced its previous Christafari forays into eclectic, ragamuffin styles with radio-friendly, R&B-tinged cool breeze, reminiscent of general market artists Big Mountain and Maxi Priest. Here, the sun shines, horns gently accent and feet dance to songs with encouraging lyrics of praise, love and reproof.
The only question with Temple Yard is whether the taming of what were raw, percussive dance hall rhythms will help or hinder it from challenging Christafari’s considerable hold in reggae. That aside, Gotee continues with some of the hottest production in Christian music, making “evryting ire” (Jamaican patois for “everything is fine”) with Temple Yard and hopefully for more Christian music fans and seekers alike, mon!
