Description
The self-titled debut album by the American hip-hop trio Souljahz (siblings Joshua, Jekob, and Rachael Washington) was self-released on Eternal Funk Records in 2000. The album was recorded by David Chenoweth (tracks: A1 to A10, B3 to B5) and Moritz Enders (tracks: B1, B2, B6 to B8) with Enders and the group producing, as well as D.J. Niques (tracks: A1, A9, B6), Jakob Washington (tracks: A3, A10, B5), and Tech The Technician (tracks: A4 to A8, B1 to B4, B7, B8). Mixed by Enders, Jakob Washington, and David Chenoweth.
Got to say that I’ve had my fair share of average hip hop albums to listen to recently and so it is with great delight that something hip hops and hippety hops out of the pile and grabs my heart with a bit of creativity and talent. Two brothers and a sista, Jacob, Joshua and Rachael, they manage to combine plenty of grooves with a highly effective slab of soulful singing from Rachael, whose voice adds plenty of class to the proceedings. Highlights include «Rap Revolution» with its fast paced delivery, top beats and classical guitar (you’re interested already aren’t you?) as well as «What You Here For» which samples a little keyboard figure from the Stranglers’ «Golden Brown»! There’s also some humour in the mix as well! Check out «Tap vs. Skratch» which, as you imagine, has a tap dancer and scratch mixer alternating solos! Just a little interlude but a good example of the creativity here. «When Angels Cry» is a bit soulful and you even get a cool instrumental version thrown in! All in all, a fine album.
