Drain

Description

Drain is the third and final album by the American grunge/alternative rock band Sometime Sunday, released on Tooth & Nail Records in 1995. The album was recorded January 1995 by Aaron Sprinkle of Poor Old Lu fame and Andy Prickett of The Prayer Chain fame at Avast! Recording Company in Seattle, Washington; with Prickett and the band co-producing. Mixed by John Goodmanson.

After Sometime Sunday was disbanded, frontman Mikee Bridges established a new band – Tragedy Ann – which released their debut album on Organic Records in 1997.

It turns out that this review is posthumous as the band decided to split after Cornerstone ’96. On hearing this album I have to say that this is a terrible loss. Their style could be described as grunge, but the sound is a lot heavier than most grunge bands. There are some very distinctive qualities in this band that make them sound original. Firstly, vocalist Mikee Bridges has an immensely deep and powerful voice any rottweiler would be proud of. He doesn’t overdo the angry vocal thing though, creating some laid back bluesy melodies. Guitarist Kevin brings a lot of space to the sound, often breaking into a lead and leaving out a rhythm part altogether. His solos aren’t pointless and boring affairs, but some very soulful playing. Lyrics are simple but very effective, tending to focus on how superficial the world is. There is a strong feeling of determination throughout this album. For example, «Suffocate»: “I can’t follow you when you lead me down the wrong path, when you suffocate my life and try to kill my soul”; «She» contains some very cathartic words: “How do you love when you feel so much feel so much pain? How did you love when they shot your life down again?”. This album is outstanding and interestingly enough was produced by now defunct Prayer Chain‘s guitarist Andy Prickett.
