Description
The Best of Sixpence None the Richer is a compilation album by the American alternative pop band Sixpence None the Richer, released on Word Entertainment in October 2004, a Warner/Curb Company. It contains all their most successful songs as well as various rarities, covers and three new tracks that had originally been intended to be released on Divine Discontent but were shelved.
Sixpence None the Richer made their mark with 1997’s «Kiss Me», which thrust them into the alterna-pop spotlight alongside such acts as the Cranberries and 10,000 Maniacs, thanks in part to a well-placed inclusion in the WB’s phenomenally popular teen series Dawson’s Creek. And while most people are only familiar with this song and their cover of the classic «There She Goes» by the La’s, this solid 18-song compilation is a thorough survey of their career thus far. Other minor hits such as «Breathe Your Name» are also included. Much like UB40, the band made a habit of finding success by covering other groups, and there’s a plethora of such tracks included here as well. Their covers of ABBA’s «Dancing Queen», Crowded House’s «Don’t Dream It’s Over», their butchering of Brian Wilson’s genius «I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times», and the Sam Phillips-penned «I Need Love» are featured during the middle third of the record. Included as a bonus track is a rendition of «Kiss Me» sung in Japanese. You can’t get much more preciously quaint than that. While fanatics will be pleased to have their more obscure as well as their finest moments on one disc, chances are that diehards will already own most of these songs in some fashion. However, casual listeners who simply want the hits and then some will find this an excellent place to start. [Rob Theakston, AMG]
Sixpence None The Richer have split and to say goodbye they have left us with a ‘Best Of’ that features all their most successful songs like «Kiss Me», «Don’t Dream It’s Over» and «There She Goes». There are a few new things that were rejected for previous albums and wash up here like «Loser Like Me» and «Us». Then there are a few oddities and rarities where they have contributed tracks to movie soundtracks or compilations so you get «The Ground You Shook» from the ‘Roaring Lambs‘ album and «Breathe» from ‘Streams‘. Personally I love their version of Abba’s «Dancing Queen» which featured on the ‘Dick’ movie soundtrack and there’s something wonderfully weird about the Japanese version of «Kiss Me» that appeals! I’ll miss them because they had a credible shot at the mainstream and were slagged off by narrow-minded churchy types who didn’t understand. Can’t remember how many people I corrected who were suggesting they’d backslidden. Why do we shoot our own side? Now it doesn’t matter as the band move on. Get hold of this and celebrate a great band! [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, March 2005]
