Description
The Language of Jesus is Love is the tenth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Scott Wesley Brown, released on Sparrow Record in 1987. The album was produced by Greg Nelson.
Scott Wesley Brown has long been fluent in the language that Christian radio and retail like to hear, and they should have no problems translating his latest effort into airplay and sales. ‘The Language of Jesus Is Love’ is an album of praise songs with social concerns: hands are uplifted to heaven, yet the eyes cannot ignore the suffering of this world.
Though he’s probably too humble ever to admit it, producer Greg Nelson can simply do no wrong in this style, having had plenty of opportunities to hone his craft on albums by Sandi Patti and Steve Green. His orchestral gifts shine on each track. For example, the progressive key changes of «All Rise» paint the text’s vision of “A great and awesome presence/ The Light as bright as day/ As I bowed to kneel with angels.” Images like that demand awesome musical effects, and Nelson, Brown, & Co. deliver with impressive dignity. First Call provides most of the background vocals.
On the title track’s duet with Shirley Caesar, Brown reminds believers that the language of Jesus is “spoken with actions of care” in response to God’s great gifts. Shirley Caesar’s emotional embellishments and fervent performance would probably encourage more than a few shouts of “Amen” – even in churches normally given to more decorum (like mine). The album’s only weak point is the «Mother Theresa». The pedestrian chorus trivializes its subject.
Although Brown has gone on record to say he disdains the Christian chart system, he will probably just have to resign himself to seeing this record occupy a prominent position there. ‘The Language of Jesus’ has all the right words, more than its quota of chill-bump-raising crescendos, and a tempered social message. Most listeners won’t care that much about airplay, awards, or sales statistics, though. For them, the main measure is ministry, and many will find this record speaking their language, too.
