Right Here, Right Now

Description

Right Here, Right Now is the seventh studio album by the American singer and songwriter Russ Taff, released on Benson Records in 1999, distributed by Provident Music Distribution. The album was recorded and mixed by James Hollihan, Jr. at the Interociter in Nashville, Tennessee; with Hollihan and Russ Taff producing. Strings conducted by John Darnall and recorded by Lynn Fuston at the Great Circle Sound in Nashville.

Since departing the Imperials, Russ Taff has maintained vital connections to gospel music, while creating a catalog of truly personal statements spanning pop, country and rock. On his debut for Benson, Taff and long-time co-producer James Hollihan Jr. have delivered honest pop sensibilities, making room for a few old-style Pentecostal shouters and a double helping of richly orchestrated music to close the disc. Wisely, the emphasis stays on Taff’s robust, spirited vocals, drawing equal parts from his Southern quartet and a funky soulfulness that suggests a debt to the African-American tradition. [Lou Canozo, CCM]

After almost three years of silence, Russ Taff marks his return with a powerful musical statement. ‘Right Here Right Now’ features some exquisite instrumentation at the hands of James Hollihan Jr, who, incidentally, co-produced the album with Taff. Despite some smoking country rock (opener «Somebody’s Comin’» and «Lazarus»), there is a definite move away from Taff s affair with new country, where ‘Right Here Right Now’ sees him pursuing a more soft pop, almost easy listening path of self expression, as evident on the gospel-tinged «Cry For Mercy», and the haunting Hollihan-penned ballad «Things Will Be Different», featuring the celebrated Nashville String Quartet. Although not immediate in it’s appeal, ‘Right Here Right Now’ grows on the listener, as each consecutive spin exposes the dynamics of both Taffs impassioned crooning and the depths of Hollihan’s playing, until one can not help but be taken in by the sheer excellence of the album. Beyond any shadow of a doubt, ‘Right Here Right Now’ is a formidable musical statement. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, February 2000]
