Description
Neither Work Nor Leisure is an album by the British contemporary praise and worship combo Revive, released on ICC in 2001. The album was produced and recorded by Barrie Gledden at B-Music in Middletown, Wakefield, England; with additional recording by Andy Green at The Basement Studio in Bolton, England.
Most songs performed by Lisa Cutcliffe (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Stephen Graham on electric guitar, Dan Norton on bass, and Phil Hicks on drums. Backing vocals provided by Lisa Cutcliffe, Corinne Bailey, Anna Elias, Luisa Graham, Helen Woolliscroft, Madeleine Miller, and Cat Gerry.
Such is the huge influence that Delirious? and The Tribe have had on Britain’s church culture that it’s difficult for any new citywide music ministry to find its own musical identity without any hint of cloning. Clearly this Leeds-based collective, with their thrust to inhabit the club and pub scene, have gone way beyond mere imitation and have developed an alt pop, sometimes acoustic, sound which is decidedly laid back inventive, intelligent, and, at times, dazzlingly eclectic. The two main vocalists for the Revive church, Lisa Cutcliffe with an effecting line in husky assertiveness, and Corinne Bailey, all haunting tremulousness, are both excellent and bring bags of conviction to the songs of worship while rapper Justin Thomas (HOG, The Tribe) brings guts and passion to all the minor key manouverings. A delight to the ear ‘Neither Work Nor Leisure’ is one of the most refeshingly original albums stemming from the Church since the collapse of Sheffield’s notorious Nine O’clock Service.
