Reflections of Ivory

Reflections of Ivory is an instrumental album by the American keyboardists Lari Goss and Cheryl Jones Rogers, released on Sha La Vah Records ‎in 1986, distributed by The Benson Company. (Sha La Vah Records was The Benson Company’s entry into the “contemplative praise music” marketplace, launched by Benson in late 1986 through two sampler albums.) The album was digitally recorded and mixed by Joe Wilson at Digital Recording; with Lari Goss producing and arranging. Keyboards provided by Lari Goss and Cheryl Jones Rogers.

Lari Goss and Cheryl Jones Rogers follow a path somewhere between praise and worship and light jazz. Dave Grusin and Bob James territory comes to mind. Alas, this recording – as many by Grusin and James – features terrific sonic quality and musicianship, but is ultimately just “elevator music.” Occasionally, Goss and Rogers’ talents transcend the weak material they’ve provided themselves. «Streets in the Rain» and «A Tender Moment» are two particularly good compositions. If you’re impressed by the devotional booklet included with each Sha-La-Vah release, this recording will probably have you tuning out the songs and tuning in on the devotions. [Bruce A.
