Description
The self-titled debut album by the American pop duo Out of the Grey (husband-and-wife Scott and Christine Denté) was released on Sparrow Records in 1991. The album was produced by Charlie Peacock.
Imagine if you can an intersection of the musical stylings of Amy Grant‘s sparkling pop compositions and vocal stylings, and Innocence Mission‘s rich guitars and subtler melodic approach, and you have an inkling of what to expect from Out of the Grey. The rich sound of modern guitars – the Byrds’ jangle meets The Edge‘s effects – coupled with inviting female vocal and jazz-influenced pop arrangements plus sensible, yet artsy lyrics, create a debut that is fresh, yet listener friendly. It’s a little like running into someone you think you recognize from the past and find you’ve made a brand new friend.
Christine and Scott Dente are Out of the Grey, and together with producer Charlie Peacock, they have concocted a sound unlike much of the current Christian pop or alternative scene. Christine’s is a strong voice, reminiscent in the quiet moments of a cross between Grant and IM’s Karen Peris, but in the bolder moments her voice has a strength and presence that is uniquely her own.
Scott Dente’s guitars are bright and engaging, and together with the support of Peacock’s keyboards and notable studio mavens like Chris McHugh, Tommy Sims and Jerry McPherson, Out of the Grey finds a balance between the new and the familiar that is quite exciting for its potential to break new commercial ground. The best bit is purely aural though, as it’s a totally delightful listening experience – kind of like if Joni Mitchell sang Christian lyrics on those musically rich, jazzy later albums of hers.
Lyrically, Out of the Grey offers a realistic, reflective view of the Christian experience. «He Is Not Silent», «Better Way to Fall», and «Only Moment» deal in gentle ways with the struggles of faith in lives not unlike yours and mine. «Wishes», «Remember This» and «The Deep» offer necessary assurance of God’s faithful love, while moving to a deeper relationship. All in all, ‘Out of the Grey’ is a valiant debut, a promising introduction to a group you may feel you’ve met before. [Brian Q. Newcomb, CCM, July 1991]
