Description
This Mystery is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Nichole Nordeman, released on Sparrow Records in 2000, distributed in the US by Chordant Distribution Group. The album was recorded by Ronnie Brookshire at the Rec Room in Nashville, Tennessee; with Mark Hammond producing. Mixed by Brookshire, assisted by David Dillbeck, at The Bennett House in Franklin, Tennessee.
In the same art pop mould as Out Of The Grey and Sarah Masen, this demonstrates that the Australian-born singer has honed her songwriting skills to shining brilliance. Take for instance her haunting song «Tremble», dealing with approaching an awesome God (“Have I come too casually because it seems to me/ There’s something I’ve neglected/ How does one approach a Deity, with informality/ And still protect the sacred?”). Or her lilting evocation of God’s mysterious presence in the prosaic on the title track. Or her billowing duet with worship man Fernando Ortega on «Small Enough». Beautiful, underrated arrangements by producer Mark Hammond though there’s only one song, the funky «Lookin’ At You (Lookin’ At Me)» that sounds like a radio hit. But as art of the highest order, pop doesn’t come much better. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, January 2002]
