Description
Are We There Yet? is the full-length debut album by the American hip-hop artist John Reuben (born John Reuben Zappin), released on Gotee Records in May 2000, distributed by Chordant Distribution. The album was produced by Todd Collins for Beatmart Productions
The relevance of John Reuben as a hip-hop flavored rapper was proven this summer when the artist appeared at the Cornerstone Music Festival. Reuben showed that he could please fans of any genre preference when he opened up for hard rockers Stavesacre. Such a paring would probably not be the first choice from concert promoters in terms of continuity, but Reuben made even the heaviest rockers get their grooves on and move side to side.
Reuben recently released his debut album on Gotee Records, which showcases his clever and quick lyrical rhymes, as well as rhythmic beats suitable to make any club bounce. The disc’s opening cut «Divine Inspiration» is a great way to start with its smooth beat mixed with several interludes by background singers and sampled electronic instruments. Although Reuben may not have a band to back him, he is a master on the turntable and actually started his career mixing music at local record stores and clubs throughout Los Angeles. Reuben is now 21, but he’s had the dream of recording an album since he was 16. Such determination and focus shines through on the disc, proving that this youngster can be tight with his sound and pretty moving with his message. The track «No Regrets» speaks of his growing up looking to the future, but also proclaiming that there is no use to look back to the past because God has a greater plan in the present. «Identify» is a street styled tune which bears similarity to a Grits or KJ52 song.
Reuben admits his influence from such artists, and also is reminiscent of some heavier groups like the Beastie Boys or Pax 217. The project ends with «Place To Be», a fast hitting rap with only background scratching noises. Unfortunately, that song isn’t a good example of Reuben’s talent and would be better off as a filler track midway through the project rather than the grand finale.
Overall, one weak track does not taint the quality of the entire album and Reuben is sure to add diversity and excitement to any music lover’s CD collection. [Andy Argyrakis, The Phantom Tollbooth, 10/7/2000]
