Description
Sheep in Wolves Clothing is the third studio album by the American rock band Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart, released on Myrrh Records in 1985, a division of Word. Also manufactured and distributed by A&M Records. The album was recorded by Joe Hardy at seven different studios (primarily at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; and at Crescendo Recorders in Atlanta, Georgia), with Hardy and Mylon LeFevre producing. Mixed by Joe Hardy.
Featuring guest artists Philip Bailey, Rick Cua, Joe English, Kerry Livgren, The New Gaither Vocal Band, Leon Patillo, Russ Taff, Greg X Volz, and Larry Norman.
Here’s another out-of-left-field contender for album of the year. And like Bryan Duncan’s Have Yourself Committed, LeFevre’s latest project ranks as his best ever. Nothing since a couple of cuts on Stranger to Danger would have prepared me for this example of LeFevre’s command of rock ‘n’ roll as an emotional vehicle.
Two cuts exemplify why Sheeps in Wolves’ Clothing is such a dynamic rock album: «Gospel Ship» and «Crucible of Love». Forget the former song’s all-star chorus. What’s important is that LeFevre has transformed his southern-gospel hit into a raging, revisionist, rave-up rocker with moments of genius too intense for most mainstream radio stations.
Rather than outline the strengths of every cut, let me say that «He Is Strong», «The Warrior», «Trains Up In the Sky», «I Will Rejoice» and «Crucible» also contain some of the best male harmony, and occasionally unison, voices I’ve yet heard in pop music. In each case, LeFevre’s written an equally arresting chorus to match.
Finally, I love the vulnerable, open quality of LeFevre’s voice and lyrics. It makes every song an open letter from his heart to ours. [Bob Darden, CCM, July 1985]
