Description
Scrub is the debut album by the American ska-influenced alternative rock band Mayfair Laundry, released on Organic Records in 1998, a Pamplin Music label, manufactured and distributed in the US by Pamplin Music Distribution. The album was produced by John and Dino Elefante.
Mayfair Laundry features lead vocalist Shannon Woolner backed by Frank Sandoval on guitar, Paul Dexter on bass, and David Snow on drums.
I’m not sure it is possible to have more fun than Mayfair Laundry seems to have on their debut project, ‘Scrub’. The CD squeals its tires on its opener, «Bucket Brigade», a ska-kafied retro number that draws liberally on ’60s secret agent theme music. They slam it into second gear with the bouncy, infectious and somewhat manic «Lovely Feet», before easing into high with «Flowerfall», a tune you will swear has Christine Denté singing lead. By the time Mayfair crosses the finish line with the straight-ahead rocker, «My Dear Watson», there is no doubt who the winner is – the listener!
Lead singer Shannon Woolner displays a remarkable range of vocal inflections, instinctively matching the mood of each individual song. And she was made for video. On the group’s first, «Lovely Feet», the camera follows her like a lovestruck puppy, and she rewards it with a playful performance. If you can imagine a young Anne Margaret singing lead while the Beach Boys play ska-inflected surf music, then you’ve got a pretty good idea of Mayfair Laundry.
