My Redeemer

Description

My Redeemer is the sixth solo album by the American singer and songwriter Matthew Ward of 2nd Chapter of Acts fame, released on Live Oak Records in 1997. Also released in the UK by Kingsway Music. The album was produced by Matthew Ward.

It is now 27 years since 2nd Chapter Of Acts were unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Ten years since they stopped touring, and umpteen years since Matthew Ward produced an album that really did him justice; in fact, truth to tell, I don’t think he ever has. How much he relied on his sisters’ vocal and songwriting talents, only he can tell us; some of his songs appear on this, so do some of Annie’s, but others contributing material include Viola Grafstrom («Our Master»), Graham Kendrick («All I Once Held Dear» aka «Knowing You»), and Melody Green («There Is A Redeemer»), and the tone is unremittingly inspirational. In fact, only one song out of the 10 would rate as medium tempo; the rest are given the lush orchestration treatment, and whilst this makes for good Hospital Radio material, others would find it rather soporific. Good production and classy arrangements do not always make for a top-rate album; this is good, but not that good. [Trevor Kirk, Cross Rhythms, February 1999]
