Up

Description

Up is the third studio album by the American rock band Fireworks (this time credited Marty McCall & Fireworks), released on MCA Songbird in 1981, a short-lived Nashville-based contemporary Christian music imprint of MCA Records. The album was produced by Fletch Wiley of Sonlight fame for Chris Christian Productions in association with Unleavened Productions.

Half of the songs were written or co-written by Marty McCall. As well featuring “Can’t Stop Running” written by Bruce Hibbard, “Maybe I’ll Trust You Now” written by James Ward, “Unless God Builds Your House” by Rick Riso, and “Givin’ It Up” written by Rick Crawford and Si Simonson. (Riso and Simonson both were former members of Messenger.)

Marty McCall, originally from South Carolina, now resides in Nashville where he cranks out some of Jesus music’s best vocals with his group, Fireworks.

Up, a bit more subdued musically than the two previous Fireworks LPs, still carries some hot cuts. «Frontrunner», a song about John the Baptist, is especially good for cooking, with some tight horn work. Since Fletch Wiley both produced and played on the disc, the horns come as no surprise.

The quiet cuts, such as the LP’s opener, «Givin’ It Up», are often impressive pieces of artistry both musically and lyrically. «Cleanin’ Up Our Act» reflects Marty’s humorous side: “Now I’ve got the message/ I’ll be quiet as a mouse/ and let you have your way/ as the keeper of my house…”

An enjoyable and edifying record from a talented believer. [Jon Trott, Cornerstone Magazine, Nov./Dec. 1981 (Vol. 10, Iss. 57)]
