Description
All Because of You is the sophomore album by the American singer Lisa Bevill, released on Sparrow Records in 1994. The album was recorded by Craig Hansen (tracks: 4, 5, 8) and Steve Bishir (tracks: 1 to 3, 6, 7, 9, 10) at The Dugout in Nashville, Tennessee; and at Gaither Studios in Alexandria, Indiana (fomerly known as Pinebrook Recording Studio); with Charlie Peacock (tracks: 4, 5, 8) and Tommy Sims (tracks: 1 to 3, 6, 7, 9, 10) producing for RBI Productions.
The irony of Lisa Bevill’s 1992 debut, ‘My Freedom‘ was that a mother of two was singing dance/pop aimed straight to teenage girls. Her children aren’t too far in age from mom’s target audience, and she was dressing the part, too.
It made for some solid pop, but ‘All Because of You’ does as well or better, and on the terms of Bevill’s own maturity. Credit that not only to songs speaking to broader audiences; her growth as a vocal interpreter and hip-as-you-want-it production from Tommy Sims and Charlie Peacock (on three tracks) adds to her success.
Bevill plays up the more adult strengths of ‘Freedom’ and capitalizes on them. The adult contemporary side of her shines brightest on «No Condemnation» and the poetic «The First Uncloudy Day». Likewise, for those who like her best when she’s danceable, the set opens with a mighty double shout: breezy downtempo sweetness of «Sunshine and Joy» and house percolation for «Hold On» (not a cover). Most surprising is her strident funkiness on «Don’t Keep Heaven» and her acid jazz persona for «Never Could».
And no, she hasn’t forgotten her young female fans. The title tune is dedicated to girls who can’t see the inner beauty God gave them. Could make great concert closer, too.
Tiniest bones to pick would be slightly intrusive background vocals and Sims, or whomever, not ‘fessing up to being Bevill’s duet partner and rap provider (who are The Breakfast Boys?!). Those are no distractions from the confidence, encouragement, and, yes, maturity Bevill exudes on ‘All Because of You’. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, October 1994]
