Kirk Whalum – The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter Two

Description

The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter II is an instrumental live album by the American jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum, released on Word Entertainment in 2002, a Warner Curb company. The album was recorded live at West Angeles Cathedral in Los Angeles, California (except then final track, “The Moment I Prayed,” which is a studio recording).

Kirk Whalum is a saxophonist of huge talent who’s played on sessions for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Whitney Houston. His first venture into gospel jazz was a critical success too so now Kirk offers Chapter II, a live concert running to a mammoth 71 minutes and 20 seconds. He’s assembled a bunch of very talented singers and musos to give us a set that will delight jazz buffs of whatever persuasion. Among the talented people on display are Tata Vega and Alfie Silas Durio, George Duke and Tyrone Dickerson, Paul Jackson Jr and Kirk’s baby brother Kevin, and the mix of hot sounds and cool sounds starts with the opening track «John 1:1», which checks in at over seven minutes, and ends with the five minutes and 12 seconds of «The Moment I Prayed». There are very few people who combine the eternal truth of the Gospel with jazz music of this quality, and if jazz spiced with fiery gospel is your scene, here’s one you can buy with confidence.
