Description
The self-titled album by the American R&B act Keoni was released by WAL (Word Associated Labels) in 1994, a division of Word Records & Music, manufactured and distributed by Word Records & Music. The album was produced by Caesar Kalinowski for Temple Productions.
Keoni is a group consisting of Keoni, Kim DeVais and Melody Paxton who, with the help of one or two hot guest vocalists – like the soulful voiced Beki Hemingway – turns in an album so heavily R&B influenced that it could have gone into the R&B Gospel category. Very much in rock-meets-R&B Sly Stone territory, the album even kicks off with a credible version of Sly And The Family Stone’s oldie «You Can Make It If You Try» while another cut sounds more than a bit like Jesus Jones. Produced by metal man Caesar so there’s some thick rock guitar mixing with all the funky dance rhythms while lyrics are God-centred if at times rather oblique. An intriguing album though I have my doubts whether it’s a particularly commercial one. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, February 1995]
