Description
Preachers from Outer Space! is a live album by the American alternative rock band Daniel Amos, independently released on Stunt Records in 1994. The album’s first nine tracks were recorded Easter weekend 1978, live on 16-track at The Anaheim Convention Center by Rich Houston and Jonathan David Brown. Terry Scott Taylor, Jerry Chamberlain, Mark Cook, Marty Dieckmeyer, and Ed McTaggart were joined by Dom Franco of Bethlehem on Steel Guitar. Leon Patillo and Isaac Air Freight also performed at this Calvary Chapel “Easter Celebration”.
The album chronicles a bit of what Daniel Amos was doing in those “missing years” of 1978-1981; after much of the Horrendous Disc album had been finished, and about four years before it would finally be released by its label. The show starts with a few of the band’s earlier country/rock songs like “Shotgun Angel,” and “Happily Married Man,” and then introduces the audience to many songs from the still unreleased Horrendous Disc album. Also included on this collection are the rare concert favorites, “Mary Baker Eddy” and “Secret Scripts & 3D Glasses” – neither of which has ever been recorded by the band for an album or released officially on any other project. Preachers From Outer Space! was produced by Terry Taylor and Tom Gulotta for Stunt Productions.
Released 16 years after the fact, this CD captures the country bumpkin fun of Daniel Amos circa 1977. The songs are full of catchy lyrics, tight harmonies and sweet pedal steel guitar; all part of Daniel Amos’ package as the “darlings of Calvary Chapel”. Recorded at the Maranatha Easter Celebration, April 1978, at the Anaheim Convention Center, the sound is wonderful with all the instruments and voices very clear and up front. Although in the liner notes Terry Taylor is somewhat apologetic for nearly everything, especially the audience, their appreciation is clear. Just on the front edge of the band’s new wave stage, there are a couple tips with a great «Hound of Heaven» and a tentative, but adequate «Horrendous Disc». «Mary Baker Eddy» and «Secret Scripts» are included from a 1979 PA show and sound fresh and confident. The bonus tracks are the fun part here. Taken from a practice demo cassette in late ‘78, all four tracks are great. An unreleased Mark Cook song, «You Always Run Away From Love» is a pop gem. Taylor’s nod to Brian Wilson, «As Long As I Live», leads into studio version of live fave «I Get Around». The package is nice, too, including a center inlay of the concert flyer by Rick Griffin.
