Description
For the Bride is the fifth solo album by the American singer and songwriter John Michael Talbot of Mason Proffit fame, released on Birdwing Records in 1981, a division of Sparrow Records. The album was recorded by Jack Joseph Puig and Wally Duguid at Peace In The Valley Studio in Arleta, California; with Dan Collins producing. Orchestra recorded by Mike Ross-Trevor at CBS Recording Studio in London, England; with Billy Ray Hearn producing. Featuring John Michael Talbot on guitar (with Jamie Owens-Collins providing backing vocals), as well as The National Philharmonic Orchestra of London conducted by Lee Holdridge (an award-winning composer, best known for his work on soundtracks and movie scores).
A further musical exploration of Talbot’s work with a full orchestra and choir, this recording is a rich romantic treatment of the Incarnation of Christ, and the mystery of Christ as the Bridegroom coming for His Bride, the Church.
For The Bride was included in the Editors’ Choice 1981 list of CCM Magazine, a list featuring 15 albums released during 1981, before the end of November. According to the December 1981 issue of the magazine, For The Bride was as well among the 15 top selling CCM albums released during that year.
FOR THE BRIDE – John Michael Talbot – Sparrow BWR 2021 – Producer: Dan Collins – List: 7.98
Talbot keeps impressive company on this album, joined by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London. Talbot’s rich, mellow vocals are enhanced by the association, as the lush string arrangements provide a background that is neither weak nor overpowering. FOR THE BRIDE, JOHN MICHAEL TALBOT – Birdwing BWR 2021 (Sparrow)
The National Philharmonic Orchestra of London provides a pleasing background for Talbot’s gentle vocal. String arrangements highlighting violin and mandolin solos make for a peaceful worship album. [Record World (Gospel Section/Gospel Album Picks), March 21, 1981]
It seems that at the moment, every Christian bookshop is displaying a new J.M.T. cassette every few months or so! Well, actually this is a CD reissue. Yet, do not let this put you off. J.M.T. must have one of the most instantly recognizable voices on the Christian music scene, and his beautiful chordal structures are in great evidence here. He has collaborated with The National Philharmonic Orchestra on this album and this brings out the depth and beauty of his music. The album is a celebration of the Wedding Day of the Lamb, and is divided into four sections, each bringing out one aspect of the Bride. Psalm 45 is full of joyful melodies, especially in the «Wedding Dance», and the whole feel of this CD is one of joyful expectation. The Magnificat; The Anunciation and The Song of Songs are captured by J.M.T.’s style and it really works well! I was not expecting to be as delighted as I was, because I felt that J.M.T. was suffering from over-exposure, but this is a dream of an album. Go out and buy it and be refreshed.
