The Enduring Story: A Retrospective is a compilation album by the American singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and producer Jeff Johnson & Irish flautist and composer Brian Patrick Dunning (December 21, 1951 – February 10, 2022), independently released on Ark Records in 2001.
This collection showcasing some of the best from the contemporary Celtic duo of Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning is “contemporary” Celtic; besides the usual flutes and strings, we also have tablas, ambient sound, and electric guitar. «The Endless Knot» incorporates layers of vocals with touches of jazz phrasing to evoke the complex beauty of Celtic interlace designs, as stunningly handsome in sound as they are in visual art. Cuts such as «An Otherworld» lead us right into just such a world. The artists move with impressive sureness from traditional Celtic themes to richly orchestrated elaborations worthy of epic cinema, weaving it all into a seamless whole. Cover graphics show a stone archway framing an emerald-green patchwork of fields, and many of these songs will carry listeners right through that opening into a nouveau world of Celtic dreams.
