Havalina Rail Co.

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American alternative rock band Havalina Rail Co. was released on Tooth & Nail Records in 1994.

I think I can safely say that this is the first folk/Cajun/blues/avant garde jazz/world beat/rockabilly/country/gospel/string band in Christian music (and I may have left a few influences out). The group, which has honed its chops playing everything from street corners to cafés to concert halls, is a swing-based string band at its core. The opening «Ragtime», for instance, mixes equal parts of jazzy attitude and rockabilly swagger. But the very next track, «One Day», has a more experimental feel to it; that’s followed by the equally strange «Proportion Thing», with its plucked strings and spoken words – and so it goes, for 19 songs and 66 minutes. Havalina’s eclecticism is admirable; however, you can only toss in everything but the kitchen sink for so long before you run the risk of confusing your audience. Still, the patient listener should find great lyrical and musical rewards among the tracks. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, January 1995]
