She’s the Queen

Description

She’s the Queen is an eight-track CD-EP by the American indie rock band Starflyer 59, released on Tooth & Nail Records in December 1994.

It heralds the arrival of the new Starflyer 59 EP in predictably bracing fashion: The whine of feedback in the distance, approaching, approaching, until it arrives at our doorstep – thick layers of guitar chords and hypnotized, dreamy mumblings poured like molasses over a solid, chunky bottom end. «She’s The Queen», the opening track, shows the up-and-coming young band, the shoegazer/noise pop darlings of modern rock (Christian or otherwise) to be on their way.

We also notice something else: There’s a lot more variety this time out. Where their debut LP had a fabulous sound, there was a saturation point where everything seemed to melt together.

«Sin For A Season», the band’s appearance on the Steve Taylor tribute album, is still the best moment the band has recorded – because their noise was built around the best song they ever recorded but ‘She’s The Queen’ has a wider field of vision (presumably because of the army of producers). «She’s The Queen» is a fabulous song in its own right; «She Was My Sweetheart» has a dreamy, 50s high school dance shuffle, and the Joy Electric remix of «Blue Collar Love» is a brilliant recreation of a 70s sci-fi movie soundtrack.

If there is a problem with Starflyer 59, it’s that we still have no idea what they are saying; perhaps they are using walls of noise to hide. On the other hand, if they are investing their lyrics with the same energy they pour into the music, Starflyer 59 could yet prove they deserve the mantle some would already thrust upon them: The Best New Band In Christian Music. If their debut and now ‘She’s The Queen’ are indications of things to come, Starflyer 59 is already a force to be reckoned with. [Chris Well, Syndicate Magazine, Issue #43, 1995]
