Facedown is a live album by the British singer, songwriter, and worship leader Matt Redman, released on the British worship label Survivor Records in 2004. Manufactured and markedet in the US by Sparrow Records/sixstepsrecords, a division of EMI CMG Label Group, distributed in the US by EMI CMG Distribution. The album was recorded by Tom Laune in January 2004, live during the Facedown Songwriters’ Gathering at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, USA; with Nathan Nockels of Watermark fame producing. Mixed by Tom Laune at Bridgeway Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
Featuring Matt Redman on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by a live band with producer Nathan Nockels on piano, Hammond B3 organ, and Wurlitzer; Andrew Philip on keyboards; John Ellis on electric guitar with Gary Burnette on additional guitars; Jonathan Ahrens on bass; and David Raven and Terl Bryant on drums and percussion. Background vocals provided by Christy Nockels and Lex Brodie. Track 7 features Chris Tomlin on vocals.
Live modern worship albums can be the dullest listens particularly when average musicians are “doing a Delirious?” or the sets are full of songs we’ve already heard on studio albums. But those pitfalls are nimbly avoided on this thrilling set recorded at a worship conference in Atlanta, Georgia. From the joyful opener «Praise Awaits You» with its memorable line “Seasons come and seasons go but you remain, oh Lord” this is clearly a showcase for some of Matt’s best new songs for years. The gem here is «Nothing But The Blood», a song which will surely resonate one day from a thousand church sanctuaries. A tremendous song, a passionate vocal from Matt and a timeless contemplation of the ability of Jesus’ blood to wash clean our sins. There are several more songs which are rich in spiritual insight and strong in memorable melody. Forget the idea that Matt has let quality control slip by doing a live album.
