Description
Love is Against the Grain is the debut album by the American indie rock band Dime Store Prophets, released on 5 Minute Walk Records in 1995, distributed by Diamante Music Group. (Originally self-released the previous year with totally different songs than on the 5 Minute Walk version, featuring only half of those tracks.) The album was recorded and mixed by band member Masaki Liu at One Way Studio in Concord, California; with Masaki and the band producing.
Dime Store Prophets features Justin Stevens on guitar and vocals, Masaki Liu on guitar, violin and vocals, Sam Hernandez on bass and vocals, and Phil Meads on drums and vocals.
Horner has landed on his feet for this edition of CR. No chilling Cedermont Kids for me…every disc a cracker! This bunch of US alternative rockers have been around for three years now. but still nothing out this side of the pond, which is a pity really ’cause this is real good music. I caught these guys live at Germany’s Christmas Rock Night and they blew the audience away (they even have a song called «Hitler’s Girlfriend»…yikes!). Not really a mad. brash rock’n’roll thing, but rather an intelligent form of serious rock and with a smattering of humour. My favourite track is actually an acousticish rock-a-billy hybrid called «Ready For The Rain», but these guys can turn it up when they want, vocals sometimes reminding me of Bono, but thankfully the rest of the band do not sound like Clayton, Mullens and Edge, going for a funky, jangly guitar thing… Other standout tracks include the title track and the excellent «Reservoir Of Souls». The Prophets are doing their own thing and doing it very well… Call your nearest import specialist and spend a dime or two on this excellent combo. [Sammy Horner, Cross Rhythms, April 1997]
