From the Beginning is a contemporary gospel compilation album by the American R&B singer and songwriter Deniece Williams, released on Sparrow Records in 1990.
From the beginning of her career, Deniece Williams has left little doubt about where she stands, every one of her albums with Columbia contains at least one song that makes reference to her faith. Enough cuts for a compilation album, maybe? You’re getting the idea.
Worth the price of the ticket: «I Am Sure», a groove-ful version of the ‘Michael W. Smith 2‘ tune, and Michael Jackson’s «We are Here to Change the World», which takes on a powerful urgency coming from the mouth of a believer. And then there’s that “amazing” minute, live from the Grammys («God is Amazing»), plus the 1986 Grammy winner, «I Believe in You».
Something to keep in mind – production values. These Columbia projects had considerably bigger budgets than your average Christian album, which makes some of these cuts a sonic joy to listen to, although some of the older cuts sound a little dated (1976 was not a banner year in American music, if you ask me).
For twelve years, Deniece Williams put her faith on the line, even when the pop starmakers would probably have preferred that she’d kept it to herself. ‘From the Beginning’ proves that the effort was worth it. Let’s hear it for the girl. [Bernie Sheahan, CCM, February 1991]
