Part of the Mystery

Description

Part of the Mystery is the sophomore and final solo album by the American guitarist and singer Dana Key of DeGarmo & Key Band, released on Ardent Records in 1995, distributed by The ForeFront Group through Chordant Distribution Group. The album was produced by Dana Key and John Hampton.

Many may remember the first solo effort by Key about seven years ago titled ‘The Journey‘. Key’s second record fits its title, ‘Part of the Mystery’ – part of the mystery is why this album isn’t much better.

Even though this album has a definite rock flavor, it is evident that Key is much more than just a rock artist. The first two cuts are suprisingly likeable, with strong vocal harmonies and pleasing tracks, complete with an a la The Byrds Rickenbacher guitar sound that isn’t overbearing to the song. The album opener and title cut «Part of the Mystery» is quick, to the point and has a very Byrds meets Jude Cole flavor that can also be heard in the remains throughout the album in the cuts «That’s What Love is About» and «Rain On». These are probably the CDs stronger points. Despite the fact that the rest of the tracks seemed to be misplaced D&K cuts that never made it to the light of day, the production quality remains solid throughout. Unfortunately, the average quality of the majority of songs causes this album to miss the mark. [Mark Adkison, CCM, August 1995]
