My Utmost for His Highest: Quiet Prayers is the ninth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Bryan Duncan, formerly lead singer of Sweet Comfort Band, released on Myrrh Records in June 1996, a division of Word. Also distributed by Epic Records, a division of Sony Music. The album was produced by Dan Posthuma.
This the third installment in the ‘My Utmost for His Highest’ series is also the first release devoted entirely to one artist. When executive producer Loren Balman first conceived the idea for this endeavor, he wanted to create a “banner,” if you will, where artists could come to do something a little different from the norm. ‘Quit Prayers’ mixes traditional music with the smooth, soulful vocals of veteran artist Bryn Duncan, and the result is another project brimming with excellence.
Kudos to Tom Howard for some truly outstanding arrangements, particularly the hymn «O Love That Will Not Let Me Go». Other highlights include «I Need Thee Every Hour», «Take My Life and Let it Be», and «Bryan’s Prayer», a clever remake of the song «I Love You With My Life».
Duncan brings his reflective side to some of the more tranquil moments on this recording, but ‘Quiet Prayers’ offers him ample space to soar with his trademark high-powered vocals, which in this case can either propel a heart toward heaven or cut short a quiet moment of reflection, depending upon one’s mood.
Also worthy of mention are the instrumental pieces «El-Shaddai», «A Heart Like Mine» (Duncan’s No. 1 hit from the first ‘Utmost‘ project) and «Beneath the Cross of Jesus». In my mind’s eye, the latter must be something of what it sounded like when King David played his harp and lyre before the Lord (although on this recordin it is played masterfully on a classical guitar). ‘Quiet Prayer’ succeeds in taking some age-old truths and giving them new life. Perhaps the project can best be summed up by the words of the late T.S. Eliot: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive from where we started and know the place for the first time.” [Laura Harris, CCM, June 1996]
