Broomtree – Self-titled album

Description

The self-titled, sophomore album by the American alternative rock band Broomtree was released on Rustproof Records in 1998, distributed by Pamplin Music Distribution. The album was recorded by Dan Techenbrook, Jeff Diri, Joe Viers, and Rick May at John Schwab Recording in Columbus and Eugene Tree Studios in Chillicothe, Ohio; with May producing. (Organ and keyboards recorded by Phil Madeira at The Mission in Nashville, Tennessee.) Mixed by Russ Long at The Carport in Nashville. All songs written or co-written by Kylie Schilg.

Broomtree features Kylie Schilg on vocals and guitar, Brian Scono on guitar, and Jonathan Batchelder on bass, with producer Rick May (of The Walter Eugenes and Zilch fame) sitting in on drums and percussion. Keyboards and organ provided by Phil Madeira.

A few years back I was privileged to put on a series of events with Exeter’s NSC as the house band and this album from Ohio’s Broomtree is the kind of sound and feel – girl fronted guitar rock with stacks of attitude – that those West Country journeymen could turn out by now if they’d had access to a quality master studio like the one used here. Broomtree write songs which use the full sonic range of guitar rock, with guitars that really bite. Kylie Schlig’s brittle voice works fine over the churning riffs and the lyrics of simple devotion («There To Guide»), forgiveness («Forgotten») and peace («Peace») stay. Just, the right side of simplistic. Maybe not a ground breaking album but if you want well produced rock by a lady-led band, Broomtree are there at an importer near you. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, April 1998]
