Benjamin – As You Wish

Description

As You Wish is the sophomore album by the American pop group Benjamin was released on StarSong Communications in 1995, distributed by Chordant Distribution Group. The album was produced by Bryan Lenox. Featuring a cover of “You Can’t Get To Heaven”, a song written by Gary S. Paxton and originally recorded on his 1981 album, Take Your Turf for Jesus.

The Benjamin in question is the son of the legendary Bill Gaither who has formed a band under his moniker. This, their second album oozes contemporary pop appeal without selling its soul lyrically. The combination of imaginatively produced pop songs with more hooks than a fisherman’s convention and clear lyrics that have something to say makes for an inspiring listen. Plenty of space for the songs to breathe leaves the listener with some standout moments. The ballad “Until We Turn” is truly beautiful with its gentle urban rhythms and uplifting lyrics. Worth getting this album just for this song! Their version of the old Gary Paxton classic «You Can’t Get To Heaven» is fun and a bit cheeky. (Benjamin sample Gaither Snr!) There are a couple of moments when it gets seriously into Bryan Adams territory with «You’re The Reason Why» sounding like a BA ballad and «Heart In Danger» like one of his rockers. But hey! It works somehow and there’s enough fresh ideas to keep you listening. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, February 1996]
