Take Me to the Cross is an album by the American singer and songwriter Al Denson, released on Benson in 1997, distributed by Benson Music Group. The album was produced by Robert White Johnson and Bill Baumgart.
After recording six albums, touring extensively and receiving much recognition as an artist meeting the needs of youth, Al Denson has released his seventh album. But this time his music is bound to reach not only the youth market but also the adult contemporary audience as well.
‘Take Me to the Cross’ is a positive pop album dealing directly with everyday issues from a strong Christian perspective. With the tragic plane crash two years ago which seriously injured Denson and killed his friend, Denson brings to this disc a sense of the frailty of life and the deep need to share the love of Christ.
‘Take Me to the Cross’ artistically blends both a strong message with good songwriting and interesting arrangements. Having co-written eight of the 10 tracks on the album, Denson incorporates his personal experience into these songs sending a strong message of hope to the listener. Songs to note are: «If You Only Knew», a poignant ballad expressing the sadness of losing someone you love; «Take Me to the Cross», a simple reminder of our need for Jesus; the rockin «Right About Now», expressing our need to get ready now; and the slightly Beatle-esque «Rain Love».
‘Take Me to the Cross’ is well-crafted, mixing great pop music and vocals with a strong message which should appeal to a wide listening audience. The project hits the mark, showing a new dimension to Denson’s work. This disc is definitely worth a listen. [Debbie Gibboney, CCM, May 1997]
