The Ministry Years, Volume 2 (1980-1982) is a double disc compilation album by the late American singer, songwriter, and pianist Keith Green, released by Sparrow Records in 1988.
Keith Green is still influencing contemporary Christian music, more than six years after his death. The fall of ’87 saw the release of the first half of a chronological, career-encompassing collection called ‘The Ministry Years 1977-1979, Volume 1‘. Now, with the the release of ‘The Ministry Years 1980-1982, Volume 2’, it is possible for the Keith Green fan to have everything he ever recorded, including five previously unreleased tracks – three in the first set and two in the new one. Reviewing a package like this is to literally review the career of an artist. With Green, suffice it so say that so much has been written that it would be hard to add anything. Green went through so many phases in his short “career”, that everyone has a special affinity for one album or period. Personally speaking, ‘Volume 2’ is somewhat weaker than ‘Volume 1’. His earlier work had a freshness, both musically and lyrically, that virtually changed the way many people thought about Christian music.
Sparrow has had to struggle to bring new Keith Green material to light. On ‘Volume 2’, two previously unreleased recordings («Summer Snow» and «Cut the Devil Down»), are included. Getting these tracks ready for release involved assembling the same musicians to cut new tracks for old demo vocals Keith had recorded – an extraordinary length to ensure the integrity of Green’s work.
Whether you have appreciated Keith Green’s music from the beginning, or have become aware of him only since his death, these two double cassette or CD packages are the ultimate collection from one of the true forces in Christian music. [Devlin Donaldson, CCM, January 1989]
