Description
The self-titled debut album by the American folk-rock/pop band Hope of Glory was released on Shalom Records in 1973, distributed by Acts 29, PA. (The group’s name is derived from Colossians 1:27;”Christ in you… The Hope of Glory!”) The album was produced and recorded by Rocky Romano at Sound Factory USA in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. (Tracks B3 and B4 recorded at Rampart Street Recording Studios in Houston, Texas.) Mixed by Romano and David Brown at Sound Factory USA.
Hope of Glory features Bubba Chambers on vocals and tymbali, Wayne Donowho on vocals, piano, organ, and melodica, Melody Shupp on vocals and flute, Carol Wallace on vocals and percussion, Melvin Mar on acoustic and electric guitars, Rich Thigpen on bass, percussion, and vocals, and Gary Ingram on drums, percussion, and conga.
Hope Of Glory began their journey as a male/female outfit with seven members, plus six additional musicians. Musically they shift from light rock to MOR ballads to country moods to horn-powered rock. The vocals can be rather clean plus there’s that occasional brass angle to deal with, but there are also a few rock cuts that emerge unscathed. «Rely On Jesus» is the best example, a tempo-shifting rural rock track ala Phoenix Sonshine that includes rousing solos for flute and electric guitar. The Andrae Crouch song «I Didn’t Think It Could Be» also makes nice use of percussion and synthesizers. Check out their swinging high-energy version of the hymn «Power In The Blood». «Lord Hello» and «Motorcycle (The Power Of My Jesus)» would later be redone for their Same Sweet Song album.
