Gentle Faith

Description

The self-titled and sole album by the American country-rock band Gentle Faith was released on Maranatha! Music in 1976. The album was recorded by Jonathan David Brown at Buddy King Studios in Huntington Beach and Sunwest Studios in Hollywood, California; and was produced by Virgil Beckham with production assistance from Al Perkins. Mixed by Brown at Davlen Sound Studios and Mama Jo’s Recording Studio in North Hollywood, California.

The band features Darrell Mansfield on lead vocals and harmonica backed by Don Gerber on acoustic guitar, banjo, and mandolin, Steve Kara on electric guitar, Henry Cutrona on bass, and Paul Angers on drums and percussion. The album also features guest musicians Fred Field on fiddle and Dave Garland on saxophone. Background vocals provided by Virgil Beckham. Strings on track A1 by Jim Stipech.

The band was originally called Jubal, but switched to Gentle Faith sometime in the middle of 1975, while at a meeting at Calvary Chapel. It was decided that the band would change its name when another band showed up with a similar name, Jubal’s Last Band. Mansfield renamed his band Gentle Faith (taken from the name of co-band member Henry Cutrona’s earlier band), and Jubal’s Last Band took the name Daniel Amos. Darrell Mansfield later formed The Darrell Mansfield Band.

Gentle Faith is the band where rocker Darrell Mansfield got his start in Christian music. Joining Darrell on harmonica and lead vocals for this Jesus rock classic are Don Gerber (acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin), Henry Cutrona (bass, lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Paul Angers (drums) and Steve Kara (electric guitar, bass, mandolin). Lots of good spirited rural Jesus music in the classic Maranatha tradition, including the rocker «Living In The Sonshine» and the banjo hoe-downers «The Whole Lump Of Dough» and «Noah». Slows a tad for some bluesy dobro honky-tonkin’ on «Goin’ Back Home». Also noteworthy for «Jerusalem», a stirring solemn string-orchestrated ballad with a great electric guitar solo that was chosen to open Maranatha 5. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
