You’re the One

Description

You’re the One is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Donn Thomas, released on Myrrh Records in 1981, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Jack Joseph Puig at Mama Jo’s Recording Studio and Davlen Sound Studios in North Hollywood, Martinsound Studios in Alhambra, and Whitefield Studios in Costa Mesa, California; with David Diggs producing and arranging. Mixed by Billy Taylor.

Donn Thomas is backed by a session band consisting of producer David Diggs on acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and various synthesizers; Paul Jackson Jr. on guitars (with “Any Other Love” featuring a guitar solo by Randy Thomas of Sweet Comfort Band); Louis Johnson (of The Brothers Johnson and Passage), Leon Gaer, and Dennis Belfield on bass; and Ed Greene on drums. Background vocals provided by nurmerous singers: Bryan Duncan of Sweet Comfort Band; Bob Carlisle of Good News and Allies fame; Richard Heath of Passage fame; Denise Hunt; as well as Edie Lehrmann (who is also featured on lead vocals on several tracks). “Believe” features a flugel horn solo by Larry Hall (an original member of Seawind when they were still called OX).

New Christian album releases are always a joy to behold, and Donn Thomas’ ‘You’re the One’, (Myrrh MSB 6680) will have congregations dancing in the aisles and praising the Lord.

Donn is a gifted singer, and his love for the Lord is virtually shouted out at you from this spirited disc. Thomas received help on this album from Bryan Duncan and Randy Thomas of the Sweet Comfort Band, along with some fine work by the Doug Cameron String Section and talented horn players.

Ed Green aptly handles the drum work, setting the beat for the songs which vary from full-force pop-rock, to soft and tender songs of praise. The result of this assemblage of great talent is a compelling, spiritually grounded album of praise that is a delight to listen to.

Donn hopes that this album will touch the heart of anyone who doesn’t know the Lord. With lyrics like these that Donn and others have written, the record is bound to get the Lord’s message across.

Best cuts from the album include: «Believe», «You’re the One», «How Can I Help But Love You», and «When He Comes». [Gale Hulett, CCM, May 1982]
