In Your Light

Description

In Your Light is the fifth and final album by the American west coast pop/rock group The Wall Brothers, released on Greentree Records in 1980. The album was was produced by Phil Johnson.

The Wall Bros. new release, In Your Light, is a combo of Southern rock and Christian pop. The production is good except that the mix seems to remove the rough edge that makes Southern rock kick. But songs like «Right In Your Light», «I Am Free» and «Finally Found My Heart» have some of that good, old FM radio, commercial, easy, pop sound; and it’s not badly presented. Rather pale shades of the Doobie Bros. weave through the presentation, but without vocal or instrumental depth. (The slow, methodical lead guitar on «Right In Your Light» leaves something to be desired.)

Side two is superior to the first, lyrically and musically. Perhaps as a result of an attempt to vary form, however, some of the lyrics mix inappropriately with the music. Probably the two best tunes on the album are «Where Do We Go From Here» and «He Must Have Planned It That Way». The former suffers slightly from finger-pointing, though musically and lyrically well-integrated. «He Must Have Planned It That Way» is a slow, bass-driven country-rock ballad, and may be the LP’s best cut. The vocal harmonies come through clear and sincere.

In fact, the sincerity of the LP as a whole is obvious. The Wall Bros. Band is obviously committed to working towards a truly commercial and artistically acceptable form of Christian rock. And there’s no doubt that they’re getting there. [CCM (Records – What’s New), July 1980]

As the ’80s dawned, the Walls Brothers band headed into the studio to record their fifth and final album. Their swansong saw them continue with the trademark harmonies but with a smoother cleaner sound. This time out, the overall impact of the album isn’t as strong though there are enough highlights to create interest. The closing ballad «He Must’ve Planned It That Way» is tinged with sweet vocals and a gorgeous guitar solo. «What’s Your Hope In» has a strong message and a cool slow funky groove but the uplifting «I Am Free» is probably the outstanding track on this set with its swirling synths and triumphant message.
