The Call

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American rock band The Call was released on Mercury Records in 1982. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Hugh Padgham at Basing St. Studios in London and The Manor in Shipton-on-Cherwell, England. All songs written by lead singer Michael Been.

The Call features Michael Been on guitar (March 17, 1950 – August 19, 2010), keyboards, and lead vocals, Tom Ferrier on guitar and vocals, Greg Freeman on bass and vocals, and Scott Musick on drums and vocals. The album as well features guest musician Garth Hudson of The Band fame on piano, synthesizer, and saxophone.

The Call officially began as a band in Santa Cruz, California, in 1979, when vocalist/bassist Michael Been and drummer Scott Musick teamed up with locals Tom Ferrier and Greg Freeman. Although The Call’s first demos were rejected by every major American label, nearly every major producer was eager to join forces with this passionate new band. In the end their debut LP was produced by Hugh Padgham (best known for his work with David Bowie and The Police), and The Call were quickly playing major venues as an opening act for artists like Peter Gabriel and Simple Minds.
