Description
The King is Among Us is a praise & worship album by the British singer and songwriter Graham Kendrick (credited “Graham Kendrick and Friends”), released on Kingsway Music in 1982. The album was recorded by Dave Aston at ICC Studios in Eastbourne, England; 1981, with Ray Goudie and Graham Kendrick producing. Arrangements by Chris Rolinson. All songs written by Kendrick except “Restore O Lord” co-written with Rolinson. (“Restore O Lord” was re-recorded in 2010 for The Very Best of Graham Kendrick.)
The album features Graham Kendrick and Joe King on acoustic guitars, backed by the BYFC band Heartbeart (Chris Rolinson on keyboards, Jonny Billingsley on electric guitar Colin Vallance on bass, and Ray Goudie on drums and percussion), with Gerry Page providing mandolin and violin. Lead vocals by Graham Kendrick, Maxine Simpson, Caroline Bonnett, Bernie and Sharon Armstrong of New Beginnings (New Beginnings’ Sue Bassett is as well featured on backing vocals), and Jackie Stoner of Heartbeart.
I believe that we are about to witness a most remarkable, and in many ways unusual new era in the life of the church, provided that is, we are willing to pay the price of obedience, and accept the trauma of seeing the overturn of our existing status quo.
God is ready to change us into a vigorous, adventurous, ‘invading’ people, no longer cringing in defensive postures or punching the air aimlessly, but celebrating the magnificence of our conquering King as we penetrate society with a quality of love and lifestyle unprecedented in this century.
These songs arose out of a desire to in some way reflect the spirit and nature of this new move, whilst also giving due attention to themes which will always be important, until that breathtaking moment when the Bride and the Bridegroom join hands.
– Graham Kendrick [excerpt from the album sleeve notes]
