Description
Message Music from the Jimmy Owens Singers featuring Mike Omartian: He Wants You to Fly is an album by the American group the Jimmy Owens Singers featuring Michael Omartian, released on Word Records 1971. All songs written by Jimmy Owens except “God So Loved The World” written by Ralph Carmichael.
From the mid-to late ’60s, Dad (Jimmy Owens) had a singing group called the Jimmy Owens Singers. This music bridged the gap between traditional choral sounds and the Folk/Rock Jesus Music that was just beginning. In fact, they were “unplugged” by the deans of some very prestigious Christian colleges for being too radical. True pioneers. Michael Omartian was working with Campus Crusade at this time and just starting his professional music career. He was roommates in LA with Paul Johnson, another burgeoning talent. Dad paid for them both to record their first studio demos of their own music. Dad used “Mike” as a singer on a number of his albums during his period. I believe this was the last of the “Jimmy Owens Singers” records before Dad and Mom started writing musicals, starting with ‘Show Me‘ (also featuring Michael, Randy Stonehill, Sherman Andrus, and my first recording project!) After that, came ‘Come Together‘, ‘If My People‘ and ‘The Witness‘. [Jamie Owens Collins on Facebook, May 2017]
