If We Have Love

If We Have Love is the full-length debut album by the American singer Linda Dove of Truth fame, released by Benson Records in 1986. The album was produced by Steven V. Taylor.

Linda Dove is a husky-voiced pop singer with a wide range and a more contemporary sound than you might expect from a graduate of Roger Breland’s Truth. Not exactly known for its musical daring, that 15-year-old group has nonetheless introduced thousands of folks to contemporary Christian music and displayed the wares of several fine songwriters. Following in that tradition, Linda and producer Steven V. Taylor (also a Truth alumnus) have unearthed some new gems and made Dove’s first full-length album a real treat.

Taylor throws together lots of keyboards, percussive geegaws, and other electronics to get your attention, but it’s the stellar songwriting and Linda’s lovely voice that keep it. «Walking with You» shows off her smooth side, but unlike many other “schooled” vocalists, she can imbue a song with pop inflections. Her Georgia roots come through on «I’ve Got to Testify», a soulful concoction wherein she gives phrases like “I can’t help myself” some real southern sass.

On ‘If We Have Love’, Linda displays a very appealing musical personality that grows on you with successive hearings. She’s one of a growing number of artists to successfully marry pop and adult contemporary music stylings. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, June/July 1986]
