Beyond Saturday Night

Description

Beyond Saturday Night is the full-length debut album by the American singer and songwriter Leslie Phillips (a.k.a. Sam Phillips), released on Myrrh Records in 1983, a division of Word. The album was recorded October 7, 1982 through December 21 by Jack Joseph Puig assisted by David Schober at Bill Schnee Studios in North Hollywood, California; with Puig producing. Additional recording at Mama Jo’s Recording Studio in North Hollywood and Gold Mine West in Los Angeles, California. All songs written by Leslie Phillips except track A2 featuring music by Matthew Chapman and Purvis Orso with lyrics by Phillips, the title track written by John Fischer, as well as “Heart of Hearts”, a song written by Mark Heard and originally recorded on his 1982 classic Victims of the Age (an album actually featuring Phillips on background vocals). A different version of “Bring Me Through”, recorded while Phillips still was in her teens, is featured on Back to the Rock, a multi-artist sampler released on A&S Records in 1981, a division of Maranatha! Music.

Beyond Saturday Night was included among the Best Albums of 1983 by CCM Magazine, voted number five on a list featuring eleven albums released from the last quarter of 1982 through the last quarter of 1983. – The debut album by 21-year-old Phillips ranks as the top Christian LP on a gospel label. Tom Stribling wrote in his June review: ” ‘Beyond Saturday Night’ defies the stereotype that all pop music must be mindless vinyl. Instead, Phillips shares with us an introspective look at someone who has counted the cost of being a true disciple and has gladly embraced the suffering that inevitably follows.”
