To the Glory of God

Description

To the Glory of God is the debut album by American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist James Ward, independently released on Peniel in 1973, published and distributed by Peniel Publications. The album was recorded by Gretchen Zoeckler and John Kryda at Shaggy Dog Studios in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Technical assistance by Don Leskiw. All songs written and arranged by James Ward. Produced by The Peniel Bible Conference, Schenectady, New York.

Featuring James Ward on keyboards, guitar, and vocals; Joan Nabors on vocals, maracas, and tambourine; Linda Schwab on vocals, tambourine, wood block, and guitar; Dan Herron on bass; and Hal Pendergrass on drums, as well as Oliver Trimiew on vocals.

The album track “Holy Spirit” was later covered by The Imperials on their 1975-album, No Shortage.

Piano man James Ward’s music would eventually evolve into an entertaining poprock style somewhere between Keith Green and Billy Joel, drawing on such influences as gospel, soul, r&b, boogie, vaudeville, barrel house, you name it. His debut album, however, kicks off on a very strong black gospel note, Ward sharing the vocal spotlight with black singers Joan Nabors and Oliver Trimiew. The music ranges from gentle ballads with a wistful air to hand-clapping pewshakers. Published and distributed by Peniel, a Schenectady, New York ministry “designed to encourage radical Christianity at a basic level of personal experience”. Scarcely recognizable with his long hair and overalls. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
