Description
The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek is the sophomore full-length album by the American pop-punk band Relient K, released on Gotee Records in August 2001, distributed in the US by Chordant Distribution. The album was produced and recorded by Mark Lee Townsend at Yellow Studios in Canton, Ohio. Mixed by F. Reid Shippen, assisted by Dan Shike, at The Castle Recording Studios in Franklin, Tennessee. All songs written by band member Matthew Thiessen except track 7 written by Matthew Hoopes. The album was certified Gold (500,000 copies sold) by the RIAA in June 2006.
Relient K features Matt Thiessen on guitar, acoustic piano, and lead vocals; Matt Hoopes on guitar and background vocals; Brian Pittman on bass; and Dave Douglas on drums and background vocals.
I didn’t go a bundle on the first Relient K album, it didn’t gel well for me and it lacked the anger that a punk album needs. I thought they were just a wannabe MxPx. This new album is a major improvement, the band have honed their sound into a tighter and meaner package and the production has a more punk rock edge. But they’re still a fun band though from the 10 second intro track to the excellent Thundercats tribute «I’m Lion-O» and the pun-laden «May The Horse Be With You». «Those Words Are Not Enough» is certainly one of the album’s musical high points. Relient K will appeal to fans of the recently demised Dum Dums and, if for that reason alone, should find themselves a market in the UK. [Andy Long, Cross Rhythms, September 2001]

(The original CD version included “Skittles and Combos” as a hidden track; the Gold edition included “The Ballad of Tim Eddings” as a hidden track; while the vinyl edition contained both tracks.)
