Description
Rock Power Praise, Vol. II: Christmas Hymns is a multi-artist compilation released on Pakaderm Records in 1991, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was produced and arranged by John and Dino Elefante.
The first installment of this three-part series was released in 1990, entitled Rock Power Praise, Vol. I: The Hymns, while the last installment was released in 1992, entitled Rock Power Praise, Vol. III: Traditional Gospel Hymns.
While I didn’t find the first volume of ‘Power Praise’ very enjoyable, which tackled traditional hymns of the Church, I thought ‘Christmas Hymns’ was wholly inventive and imaginative. Some more staid listeners may not appreciate their Christmas faves being energized quite this much, but they probably don’t buy Pakaderm albums anyway!
Jamie Rowe from Guardian checks in with a bluesy interpretation of «God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen» and John Elefante contributes a sensitive rendition of «Silent Night», but it’s really Robin Kyle who steals the show with his robust reading of «Hark! The Herald Angels Sing». [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, November 1991]
