Sometimes Miracles Hide

Description

Sometimes Miracles Hide is the fourth album by the American singer and songwriter Bruce Carroll, released on Word Records ‎in 1991. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic, a division of Sony Music. The album was produced by Brown Bannister and Tom Hemby for RBI Productions.

Bruce Carroll has given his record company fits ever since he first walked into a recording studio. As a pioneer on Word’s now-defunct New Canaan label, Bruce was the guy who was supposed to sell the Christian music buyers on the concept of “Christian country.” Funny thing was, he started ripping the top off the charts a la Steven Curtis Chapman. So, is he country or pop?

Who cares? The man just makes mighty fine music, no matter what you choose to call it. Building on the superb foundation laid by producer Bubba Smith, who produced ‘The Great Exchange‘, Brown Bannister and Tom Hemby have made ‘Sometimes Miracles Hide’ yet another splendid showcase for Bruce Carroll’s talents.

Did I mention Steven Curtis Chapman? Being the gracious guy that he is, he won’t mind sharing some of those Dove Awards with the likes of Bruce Carroll, and ‘Sometimes Miracles Hide’ is the album that should finally give Bruce the exposure he deserves. These are 10 finely crafted songs – no fillers – about real life, honest struggles, joy, pain, your basic whole realm of everyday faith in Christ, covering everything from helping the homeless and loving the AIDS victim («If We Only Had the Heart») to making choices in tempting situations («Level Head»). The title track is a tear-jerking true story, rendering emotions without manipulation.

If it wasn’t for the fact that Bruce himself is so darn talented, you could chalk it up to The Bannister Touch. But things like unusual and tasty vocal arrangements on the cool, soothing almost-duet with Twila Paris («I’m Still Here»), singing up his hip pickers like Ricky Skaggs and fiddler Mark O’Conner do bear the mark of the producer who’s boosted a career or two.

You’ve noticed Bruce riding in the Jeep with Amy, Russ and Sandi on that Word ad. Maybe they’ll give him a ride to the Dove Awards. [Bernie Sheahan, CCM, December 1991]
