Voyage to the Inner Kingdom

Description

Voyage to the Inner Kingdom is an album by the Canadian folk-rock band Patmos, released on New Born Records in 1980, a division of Praise Industries Corp. The album was recorded by Andy deGanahl and Gary Platt at Bee Jay Recording Studios in Orlando, Florida; and at Hedden West Studios in Schaumburg, Illinois; with Jon Phelps producing. (Phelps was a former vocalist and guitarist of Suncast, and later on president and part owner of Heartland Records, the label home of Prodigal.) Mixed by deGanahl at Bee Jay.

One of the top New Born releases, Voyage To The Inner Kingdom evokes the days of top male/female Jesus music groups like Suncast, Phoenix Sonshine and Parable. Dreamy 12-string progressive acoustic sounds drift soothingly along enhanced by female vocals, flute and string synthesizer, rounded out with some exciting electric folkrock. Guitar leads have a pleasant pedaled Phil Keaggy flavor to them. Ten original songs, all Scripture referenced, with titles like «Thine O Lord», «Give It All Up», «Faithful Friend», «Make Me A Sacrifice», «Strong In The Lord», «I Could Never Repay» and «That’s What Jesus Is To Me». Stunning flying ship fantasy cover art by Loyd Boldman of Prodigal, suitable for framing beside Arkangel and Jimmy Hotz. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]

An LP of songs each reflecting a scriptual passage. (Citations follow each song title.) The Canadian group displays a slight late sixties Jefferson Airplane flavor – heavy soprano vocal leads with mostly percussion and vocal harmony. Several cuts have worship value, and Gale Limbacher’s tremulous soprano lends the band unusual sound unique in adult contemporary Christian Music. (Best cuts: “John’s Jingle,” “I Could Never Repay”) [CCM, September 1980]
