Description
Covenant Woman is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Janny Grein, released on Sparrow Records in 1977. The album was recorded by Billy Taylor at Mama Jo’s Recording Studio in North Hollywood, California; with Billy Ray Hearn producing. Strings arranged by Harlan Rogers. All songs written by Bill and Janny Grein except tracks A5 and B3 co-written (“assisted by”) with Mike Deasy and Jim Coble, respectively.
Featuring Janny Grein on lead vocals (as well as piano on tracks A4 and B2), backed by a session band consisting of Harlan Rogers on keyboards, Mike Deasy on guitar, James “Arky” Felix on bass, and Bill Maxwell on drums. Background vocals provided by Bili Thedford, Mike Deasy, and Harlan Rogers.
One of the new faces on the burgeoning Sparrow label was singer/songwriter Janny Grein. Free Indeed introduced her mellow style through a collection of slow songs, some acoustic, some orchestrated with strings, some with gospel and light-rock touches, a few with the piano-ballad feel of Carole King. Covenant Woman contains some of her most popular songs, including «Bread On The Water» and the title track. He Made Me Worthy reveals a more rock-edged Janny on a couple of songs («Don’t Give The Devil An Opportunity», «Psalm 20»), while also leaving mild impressions of Carole King («Follow The Way Of Love», «Diamond In The Rough») and Janice Ian («Love To Me»). A lot of familiar names assisting on all of these, including 2nd Chapter Of Acts, the Talbots, Mike Deasy, Harlan Rogers, Billy Maxwell, Hadley Hockensmith, Bili Thedford, Fletch Wiley, Jessy Dixon and David Diggs.
