He Made Me Worthy

Description

He Made Me Worthy is the third album by the American singer and songwriter Janny Grein, released on Sparrow Records in 1978. The album was recorded by Billy Taylor and Jack Joseph Puig at Martinsound Studios in Alhambra, California; with Billy Ray Hearn producing. Mixed by Wally Duguid at Buckskin Studio in Northridge, California. Strings arranged by David Diggs and recorded by Frank Kejmar at Whitney Recording Studios in Glendale, California. All songs written by Janny and Bill Grine except track A1 written by Janny.

Featuring Janny Grein on lead vocals, backed by a session band consisting of Larry Muhoberac on piano, Larry Williams of Seawind fame on synthesizer, Mike Deasy and Hadley Hockensmith on guitars, with the latter also playing bass, Bill Maxwell on drums, and Fred Petry on percussion. As well featuring Glen Myerscough on saxophone and Fletch Wiley on flugelhorn and trumpet. Background vocals provided by Bili Thedford, James “Arky” Felix, Jessy Dixon, as well as Mike and Kathie Deasy.

The album track “Keep the Fire Goin'” was as well featured on Sparrow Spotlight Sampler, a multi-artist compilation released by Sparrow Records in 1978. “More Than Conquerors” was later covered on the first installment of the multi-artist electronic dance music series Nitro Praise, released in 1994.

One of the new faces on the burgeoning Sparrow label was singer/songwriter Janny Grein. Free Indeed introduced her mellow style through a collection of slow songs, some acoustic, some orchestrated with strings, some with gospel and light-rock touches, a few with the piano-ballad feel of Carole King. Covenant Woman contains some of her most popular songs, including «Bread On The Water» and the title track. He Made Me Worthy reveals a more rock-edged Janny on a couple of songs («Don’t Give The Devil An Opportunity», «Psalm 20»), while also leaving mild impressions of Carole King («Follow The Way Of Love», «Diamond In The Rough») and Janice Ian («Love To Me»). A lot of familiar names assisting on all of these, including 2nd Chapter Of Acts, the Talbots, Mike Deasy, Harlan Rogers, Billy Maxwell, Hadley Hockensmith, Bili Thedford, Fletch Wiley, Jessy Dixon and David Diggs.
